Types of Mission Seating for Helicopters and Fixed-Wing Aircraft

We specialize in mission-critical aircraft systems, including mission seating. Each mission is slightly different. Therefore, seating arrangements need to be flexible enough to accommodate even the slightest change. Getting it right requires understanding the different types of mission seating common to helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

We design and build interiors for air ambulances, evacuation aircraft, law enforcement and military aircraft, and VIP helicopters and planes. Every aircraft's needs are dependent wholly on the missions it will fly. So mission seating needs to be on point.

Mission Seating for Helicopters

Helicopters are perfect for missions in which fixed-wing aircraft do not perform well. Due to their maneuverability and landing/takeoff advantages, helicopters offer a level of performance ideally suited to accident scene missions. Yet helicopters are equally at home running more relaxed facility transfer missions as well.

Here are four types of mission seating for helicopters:

  • Transport and Utility – For utility and troop transport missions, modular seating is ideal. Installing seats along cabin sides offers the greatest flexibility and maximum capacity for additional cargo.

  • Medical and Stretcher – Air ambulance and medevac helicopters must offer both medical seating for crew and stretchers for patients. All seating must be stable and must not impede access to medical equipment.

  • Executive and VIP – Helicopters with high-end mission interiors tend to offer more comfortable ergonomic seating with extra features that can accommodate business and executive requirements. Plush fabrics, soundproofing, and enhanced comfort features are commonplace.

  • Specialized Missions – Some types of missions defy categorization. In such cases, specialized mission seating must be highly adaptable. It can be configured one way for tactical operations and another way for law enforcement or search-and-rescue.

We operate on the understanding that it is not enough to just have seating. Mission seating must be commensurate with the tasks a mission is intended to accomplish. Otherwise, it just gets in the way.

Mission Seating for Fixed-Wing Aircraft

Fixed-wing aircraft tend to be used for longer range missions that do not require a helicopter's maneuverability. Still, mission seating is critical. How passengers are seated directly affects the usefulness of a given aircraft. So the same amount of time and care is put into designing the right seats.

Here are four types of mission seating for fixed-wing aircraft:

  • Medical and Air Ambulance – Fixed-wing aircraft cabins are ideal for medical and air ambulance services because they can be configured in an endless number of ways. Specialized configurations, including medical mission seats and stretchers, provide the workspace necessary for crews to do their jobs.

  • Passenger Missions – Passenger-centric missions can be accommodated through different types of mission seating. From conventional airline-style seats to benches and rag and tube-style military seating, any passenger mission can be accommodated.

  • Business and VIP – The private jets that carry business executives and world leaders are often fitted with high-comfort swivel or recliner seats with advanced features. This type of mission seating must be both comfortable and able to withstand the rigors of flight and constant use.

  • Specialized Missions – As with helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft can be utilized for specialized missions requiring equally specialized seating. From reconnaissance to weather observation, cabins must be equipped with the most appropriate seating for each task.

When it comes to mission seating, we make it our business to thoroughly understand your aircraft and its needs. We design and engineer seating and cabin layouts with flexibility in mind. From modular builds to flexible layouts, we can create exactly what you need in your helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.

Seating is critical to your aircraft's missions. Don't settle for generic seating that may not meet your exact specifications. Instead, choose mission seating designed around how you intend to operate your aircraft.
